Ja, ‘Een Vriend’, het bekende tegelgedichtje hangt in menig huis. En zijn liefdesversjes schijnen vaak geciteerd te worden. Maar de meeste komen toch echt niet veel verder dan dat. Zonder te weten hoe groot de invloed van zijn werk ook vandaag nog is.
Hoeveel mensen lachen zich niet rot bij sketches die gebaseerd zijn op Toon’s trucjes? “De voorzitter” werd tientallen keren herhaalt door bekenden en minder bekende cabaretiers. De onderliggende truc, tot op het flauwe af blijven herhalen, is mening één vreemd. Een liedje als “Als de liefde niet bestond” werd gecovered door bijvoorbeeld Guus Meeuwis.Of grandioos gezongen door WendeSnijders, als eerbetoon.
Maar laten we vooral niet vergeten hoe mooi Toon’s versjes waren. Vaak klein, simpel en eenvoudig. Maar schoonheid zit in kleine dingen.
